Dr Ranganathan gave a purpose, direction and vision to the profession of library science in India. He made an enormous contribution to the field of library science, greatly impacting all aspects of librarianship – classification, cataloguing, reference, drafting legislative bills, devising library science curriculum, heading various associations and institutions in various capacities, all aimed towards overall development and growth of library services in India.

He propagated the Five Laws of Library Science:

• Books are for use
• Every reader his/her book
• Every book, its reader
• Save the time of the reader
• A library is a growing organism

The underlining thinking, principles and philosophy hold true and remain as powerful even today in this age of technology and information. To continue to take inspiration from these laws and make efforts to uphold his ideals and strive towards making library services available to more and more members of community would be a true tribute to the vision and legacy that Dr Ranganathan has left behind.
